How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on ThimbleGuide starts with one question: will this machine suit a beginner and the projects you have in mind?

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the hoop

Hoop size sets the biggest design a machine can stitch in one go. We check the hoop sizes each maker lists, plus the built-in designs and fonts.

We also check whether a machine only embroiders or also sews. When a project needs a special hoop, like one for caps, we say so.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at hoop size, built-in designs, the screen, how designs load, speed and what comes in the box. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

When a detail comes from the maker, we say so.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like thread breaks, a confusing screen or a hoop that slips.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A machine that's great for hats and patches may score lower in a guide for a first-time hobbyist.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have stitched on every machine we cover.

Some designs and logos are protected by copyright or trademark. Only stitch designs you made or have the right to use.
